1979 117c Turbo?

Post by darrylw1 »

I have a 1979 117c and would like to gain some more power. At presant im undecided whether to find a Piazza turbo setup or use a toyota sc 12 or sc14 supercharger out of an mr2. I would like to know what the experts think. regards Darryl.

Turboooo!! More efficient, and more high end. Possibly consider the smaller Garrett "Disco Potato" turbo - GT28RS with the smaller exhaust housing, I forget the exact model number but I think it has an AR of 0.48 or something versus 0.60.... Argh, these numbers are making my head hurt already, I'm sure I just made an idiot of myself. But yeah, the smaller GT28RS. You can pick one up around the $1300 mark in good condition from some quality turbo rebuild places.

Or maybe on the cheap, a standard T28 in good condition from an SR20DET Silvia etc for around $400-$500.

You could probably start your own thread to be honest, this could lead to lengthy debate lol

im pretty sure the piazza setup wont work because the manifold has the sameport spacing as the g series while the twin cam has even spacing.

Shit, didn't see that. Yeah I'd say that's a definite no-go on the Piazza turbo gear fitting a twincam, unless you get the exhaust header welded to shit, which defys the point of not just getting a T28 and having an existing header modified.

Elio, .48 rear housings belong on Kei cars. A .64 rear housing is perfect for a 2L.

Hmm, how about 1.8lt? I guess the cylinder capacity exhaust flow is offset by the higher revs of the 180W. I don't want any lag, just because of hills/drift etc.... Reckon the .60 would be ok?

Did go and install the mr2 supercharger, went great but oil ozzed out of every joint of the old motor.Decided to add 200 lazy horsepower by installing a late model 3.8 v6 ecotec with the g4 link computer, and 5 speed from a commadore . I had to have a custom light weight fly wheel made, and custom headers to squeeze past the steering box Now Im happy, and its a blast to drive, and is suprisingly economical to run. Thanks to all the advice from forum members. Darryl.

Wow a moo powered 117!

I've heard the valve stem sealing isn't the best (well pretty much non existent) in the DOHCs so you were probably pressurising your sump with a bit of boost. A decent catch can or oil air separator probably would of helped a fair bit with the oil leaks.

Good to see a conclusion after 4+ years.

As to stem seals, they are no different to other Isuzus and most Jap cars. I suspect it was simply a worn engine, else previously worked by non-knowledgables.

As to catch cans, they shouldn't be required. I don't think the 390HP turbo G200W needed one.
IZU069 - Isuzu means a lot to me.
